The second in our French film series, Jean-Luc Godard’s 1963 New Wave drama, starring Brigitte Bardot, tells of a French playwright’s attempt to work alongside a vulgar American film producer. Sight & Sound critic Colin MacCabe referred to the film as “the greatest work of art produced in postwar Europe”.
12th July, 5:45pm - Franz
For the finale of our French film festival, Jacques Brel’s popular 1971 film set in a Belgian seaside boarding house for civil servants recovering from surgery and maladies. The six male residents’ lives change dramatically when two women arrive: Catherine, lively, sexually liberated, willing to kiss, dance, and sleep with the men, and Leonie, reserved, formal, conservative. The film features the renowned French actress and chanteuse Barbara, the subject of tonight’s one-woman show.
