James Cockburn observes then draws the world around him. People and places are what interest him. Whether this be full-on action or peace and quiet he always aims to get to the kernel, the sacred spot, the sine qua non, without which there is nothing. His paintings are undeniably colourful but they are based on precise, even exact, looking. His drawings are direct, full of significance, on a knife edge. His ceramics are created on more than thirty years of development, they are carefully crafted: but more they are alive!
