Hotel Finix is an exhibition of 200 small gouache paintings by Martin Spanyol that depict remembered and imagined Mediterranean locations. The work explores the enigmatic moment of arrival, the selectiveness of memory and nostalgia. The paintings show a range of themes, azure skies, hilltop towns, town squares, churches, hotel rooms, streets at night, gardens, palm trees, cacti and still life but all contain the intense light and heightened colour of the South. The work is also concerned with the nature of Painting itself – with how texture, painterly gesture, pattern and abstract surfaces create illusion. These paintings are upbeat, celebratory and appeal to a shared experience of the anticipation and memory of travel – an imaginary grand tour.
‘Finix’ is an alternative spelling to ‘Phoenix’ when transcribed from the Cyrillic.
Hotel Finix is located in Southern Crete and can only be reached by ferry.
