Raku pottery uses a 16th century Japanese technique where a pot is removed from the kiln at the height of the firing (about 1000º) and rapidly cooled in sawdust, paper and other combustibles. This elemental process of smoke and flame causes the unpredictable and unique surface cracks, pits and bright colour variations that are seen in this exhibition.
Cherry’s ‘Philosopher’ series uses simplified elongated forms to represent the human head in thought. They stand singly, in talking pairs or groups signifying communication across the divisions of age, gender, ethnicity or mood. These sculptural pieces can be used to create physical representations of conversations that support adults and children with communication needs.
