The memories of Nellie’s lifestyle inspired these “On the Table’ collages. They are a glimpse into the intimate world of Nellie and her four daughters, who had to be seen and not heard when they were out with her. They depict everyday existence: people observing, gossiping and going about their normal business in situations of their own constructions.
Likewise visiting friend’s houses, I realised their ‘Kitchens’ were filled with everyday objects, placed in juxtaposition to the kitchen equipment, personalised. This inspired me as well as eating their delicious food, to create another series of work depicting their personal taste and colour.
The Brixton Market textiles print also using this technique was inspired by the research recently produced for the two posters commissioned by London Underground depicting shopping in Brixton and East Dulwich.
